There are two people on this list that uses PDAs as a GPS they can
perhaps tell you what they think. I've just used laptop + USB GPS and
that's kind of painful to use when using a bike, I would much rather
have a handheld that just switches on and records.
That being said, the laptop/PDA + external GPS, is alot cheaper.
That's why I'm using it.

PS. I save the tracklog in memory on my laptop to increase battery
life. I recently experienced what "volatile" memory means. :-)
