I've found the eTrex Legend passably accurate in most scenarios. It's
better in rural than urban areas, but even still I have mapped large
numbers of streets in residential parts of Southampton and the maps do
seem to correspond passably well to reality. That said, I have done little
if any mapping in city *centre* areas.
Tree cover in winter and early spring isn't too much of a problem; even in
summer it takes 10 minutes or so of walking through a wood to cause
problems. The only scenarios I've had serious problems with are wooded
valleys. Even if it does 'go', IMX the resulting map is normally good
enough for walkers.... there may be a few 'kinks' in the path which do not
show, but the general direction of the path is evident and doesn't go
seriously astray. That said, I've never attempted to map a large, dense
wood.
