Hmm. I tried this last night - no dice. The Legend CX/Mac OS X
combination is currently not supported by anybody, even by proprietary
software which I'm loathe to purchase (yes, I know - OS X is proprietary
but that's my one compromise to have a good looking Unix desktop)

Doesn't gpsbabel exist on mac? You may find that some variant on this
script works for you - it's what I use on linux to to read tracks from
my Garmin connected via a usb-serial adaptor:

#!/bin/sh
T=garmin,poweroff
I=/dev/ttyUSB0
D=`date +%Y%m%d-%H`
O=$HOME/gps/$D.gpx
echo Reading tracks from $T at $I, writing gpx to $O gpsbabel -t -i $T
-f $I -o gpx -F $O ls -l $O
