[OSM-talk] too many nodes

In some places, I find line segments drawn with far more nodes
than is necessary. One example is here in Berlin,
http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit.html?lat=52.5199999336276&lon=13.37&zoom=14
In this example, which shows a motorway, the nodes need to be
moved around so that the two lanes appear parallel at constant
distance. The nodes should be aligned in pairs, as described on
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Editing_Standards_and_Conventions#Roads
If the applet had a button to remove a node while shortcutting the
segments that connect to it (provided there are 2 of them), it
would be easy to fix this kind of error. Right now, it is a royal
pain to redraw a map like this into something smooth and useful.
And it's all the worse when the line segments zig-zag because
somebody has been walking around.
I assume these line segments, ugly as they are, were automatically
generated by some client software (JOSM?), directly from a single
tracklog. Can this software be improved?
