Daily updates to planet.osm would be nice if they were available, simply
because downloadable maps of someone's area (e.g. that PDF road atlas) would
be available soon after they finished editing the information -- good for
showing off the project to friends, and nearly instant feedback for mistakes
(e.g. spot the gap where you misspelled motorway and it didn't turn blue)
that are invisible on JOSM and the online editor.

One idea that doesn't involve burdening OSM servers:
 * loads of people download the area they're working on in JOSM, as they edit
it (anyway)
 * JOSM can save that as data.osm
 * so setup a webserver where people can upload their local data.osm files
after they've finished editing a region
 * webserver then merges the uploads with a local copy of planet.osm, and
serves the result.
