In the May Planet.osm dump, there are approximately 4500 ways.

Approximately 3700 of those are strictly linear: That is, the entire way
can be treated as one line.

Ways which fall under this category are available as a shapefile from
http://london.freemap.in/output/linear-ways-planet-05-2006.zip .

This is the shapefile used to power the Tagsmania ways layer, as
mentioned earlier on the list.
