The MapGeneration stuff is quite interesting in itself. However, the
project currently isn't really ongoing. The two developers did that
one for their thesis and development is only done quite slowly, as
time permits.

The MapGeneration project uses the Free Academic License, which is
GPL-incompatible from the FSF point of view.  There are a number of
interesting bugs, too.  Since the concept is interesting, it would
probably be interesting to rewrite it, with different datums and
coordinate systems in mind.
