If we had an EU list I'd probably send only to that so apologies to those
further a field.
I've been thinking about a project that can involve a large number of us yet
not involve us all having to meet up. What sprang to mind were long distance
footpaths.
The European Ramblers Association has a number of long distance paths, a
couple of which seem to be what I had in mind.
The E2 runs from the Mediterranean, north through France, Luxembourg and
Belgium where it splits into two. There are then two paths that run north
through the UK, one in the east and one through the centre. Total length
4850km
The E8 runs from Ireland in the west to Bulgaria in the east and crosses the
UK, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. Total length is
4390km
These two paths cross in the UK so I'm calling it the "OSM Crossroads
Challenge" It's a challenge because the two routes are of fairly similar
length, which means they can compete to see which progresses the fastest :-)
I'm also sure we can dream up plenty of other challenge opportunities along
the way and hopefully with us getting out mapping a section of path we also
get the opportunity to map the surroundings as well.
We can use a special tag for ways along the route so that the completed
lengths can be found in the planet file.
I'll start a wiki page on this but just wanted to get some feedback on what
people thought. It doesn't have a "street" focus although I'm sure plenty of
streets will get added to OSM as a result of it. Anyway, regardless, I'll be
kicking off over the New Year by doing some of the E2 route where it runs
along the Heart of England Way.
All 11 of the European Ramblers Association routes can be found here:
