No. Think of adding nodes etc as tracing over the top of the GPX layer. The
GPS points are only in there as a reference to help you put everything else
in the right place. You aren't trying to convert the GPX layer into anything
else, it's just for reference.
So there are two lots of GPX data you can trace over - your own, from .gpx
files, and all the trackpoints that have been uploaded to OSM already.
Obviously, when you upload your .gpx through the website, they'll appear in
the trackpoints you can download, but using local files allows you to change
the colour on that layer. So you could have everyone else's gps points in
white, yours in red, and use both sets to help you work out where the
streets are.
