Hi everyone
I'd really like to spend a full month on openstreetmap getting the
server to a nicer place... with your help:

Don't know if this will work, but it would be awsome all round if so.
Feel free to donate and lemme know what you think.
Lars, you can *even* be my manager :)

I'd like to spend a whole month full-time getting the server to a better
place. I'd like to
* Finish the Rails port
* Fix the language/encoding issues
* Add a user preferences API
* Add a GPX API
* Give the API knowledge of who created things and when
* Let you bookmark areas and tag them
* Move to OpenLayers
and more. These things will be in a special trac milestone. I'd hope to
see a massive improvement in the site during a month.
This is an experiment to see if I can still pay my rent and work on
OpenStreetMap full-time. Other open projects have done similar things
and recently OpenStreetMap contributors generously paid for a set of GPS
units. I (or other people) would get around to adding all these features
at some point, but as we rely on free time this point might be some way
in the future. Thus you are invited to pledge any amount you like, to be
paid to the OSM Foundations Treasurer. When a months worth of wages is
filled by you and others, you'll be contacted. If this works, I'm
planning to spend December hacking on OSM with daily blog posts on the
OpenGeoData blog charting progress. You, as my boss, are to hold me
accountable.
Everyone who donates will be entered in a draw to win a super rare OSM
poster and my copy of Mapping Hacks. You'll get a warm feeling in your
tummy and your name in lights on OpenGeoData, too.
have fun,
