In related vein, I communicated a bit with the developer of http://oxbus.sparemint.com/ .. real time Oxford Bus Route maps. I believe he has also spoken with the OSM Oxford crew.
He's interested in collecting the bus routes, perhaps in coordination with an OSM Weekend event in Oxford.
Once geographic data is collected, the next step is to collect schedule information. http://www.public-transport.org.uk/ gives a good overview of XML formats in use for sharing transport schedules.

Subject: [OSM-talk] wikiproject rail?
I've spoken briefly to Matthew Somerville who made this
http://traintimes.org.uk/map/
...and it seems we could help a lot if we had national rail data we
could give him to improve those routes! :-)
Has anyone been actively collecting train data? I've just started.
Has anyone attempted to extract just the motorways from planet.osm?
Would anyone (in light of the wiki being down) like to coordinate a rail
project?
have fun,
