While I'm prepared to agree that bus routes could (and probably
should) be kept separate, the smaller issue of keeping the data
up to date is no worse than keeping the rest of OSM up to date.
We're already doing roundabouts where there were traffic lights
last year. And speaking about my own town, the bus route between
the train station and the university campus is likely the only one
of interest within the coming two years. I predict there will be
enough students with GPS receivers who can keep this up to date.
To make all OSM data more manageble, we might benefit from
separating physical roadworks (road width, surface coating, number
of lanes) from traffic rules (allowed vehicles, speed limits,
thoroughfare, one-way streets) and uses (bus routes, weekly
icecream delivery, steamboat time tables, library opening hours,
traffic congestion statistics, etc.).
