I've just given VIPS a whirl, and it is able to nicely crop out tiles from
the really large PNG.
There are rpms of VIPS available from dag, and it's in debian
(libvips-tools). Are people who are thinking of using the static image
generation happy with installing it?
(ImageMagick 6.2.5 on FC5 seems not to have the cropping bug, but all the
versions in debian do have it, and ImageMagick does seem to be much more
resource intensive than VIPS)
