I've had similar problems when I forgot to rename the file I was trying
to osmarender.

example_debian expects to render a file called data.osm so I need to
move / rename the file I'm working on in JOSM from CurrentFileName.osm
to data.osm in the osmarender directory. Then I use inkscape to view
data.svg

Good luck.
