in gpsdrive we try to use (at least for the points of interest) simple english 
words for the database. translations for the localized versions will come 
through gettext or a table or something like that, even for a localized 
english version (if necessary).

I think, this is also a good approach for osm, because when you have only 
numbers, you can loose the overview very fast; when there is a word, you can 
immediately see, what it means.

@david: a roundabout is officially called "kreisverkehr" in germany, but we 
sometimes also call it "kreisel" ;-)
