[OSM-talk] Freemap-NPE: OSM + New Popular Edition Mashup

Would like to announce the first prototype of a project to overlay OSM
footpath data on the New Popular Edition maps from npemap.org.uk,
codenamed "Freemap NPE".

Based on the latest planet.osm, this renders anything with a highway tag
of footway, bridleway, cycleway or unsurfaced on top of the New Popular
Edition tiles. Since many countryside areas haven't changed much in the
last 50 years, this is arguably a useful navigation resource for walkers
and other countryside users.

In time, I intend add all the Freemap features to it, such as annotating
paths to indicate path blockages, interesting views and so on.
What I would also like to do is use it as a means to add POI data, such as
pubs, to OSM.

It's available at

http://nick.dev.openstreetmap.org/openpaths/

(openpaths being another codename for the project)

Cartographic hints (e.g. better choice of colour scheme) welcome. It's not
slippy yet, it basically uses the same sort of interface as npemap.org.uk.

As an aside BTW, with the twin announcements this week of the nestoria
tiles and the NPE maps, I intend to discontinue development of the Freemap
renderer unless people see a need for it - and instead focus Freemap on
osmarender or NPE derived base maps.

Nick
