Agreed. 

One model I'd be interested in pursuing is the last.fm one - by turns it 
has chatboxes, wiki-pages, blogs, forums and calendars, all integrated 
and under one interface and log-in.  It also has ad-hoc group forming, 
with group-level stats... I'm sure Wikiprojects could benefit from 
automatic stats!  Were OSM to attract enough funding for a couple of 
full-time client-side developers, I'd love to see this happen.  Just 
like I'd love to see an accessible and properly maintained web-based 
editor, wiki-style vandalism roll-back, attribution and datestamps 
(changelogs for bounding boxes), API download links from the slippy map, 
etc. etc.

In the meantime, Foundation++, wiki++, JOSM++, OSMonth++, IRC++, mailing 
lists++.  :)
