Hi,

> Geotagging is still in its infancy on Wikipedia. The entire list for
the English Wikipedia is 1.4 MB. But if we could display these names on
OpenStreetMap, I think we could give users one more incentive to add
coordinates to Wikipedia articles.

there are already several websites linking geocoded wikipedia article
with maps.
E.g. http://www.placeopedia.com/

slippy map. Would this be hard to implement in AJAX + API?

However, I would suggest to rather not adapt single applications for
using OSM data.
I think I would be better to have a generic Interface for displaying map
tiles, points and ways - simular to the APIs available from Google Maps,
Yahoo Maps or Visual Earth.
http://www.mapstraction.com/ is a project to bring these different
interfaces together. If we could have something similar for OSM, other
websites could easily switch to OSM data.

BTW: The Google Map API also allows to add own layers (in addition to
the default map and satellite layer). One could also think about adding
an OSM layer. Basic requirement for this is of course the availability
of pre-calculated map tiles in OSM.

    Jens
