I think an AJAX style search would have most impact here. User enters 
place name then the map goes straight to the location at a good zoom 
level. If there are copyright concerns over geonames.org, Mikel's brainoff 
geocoder could be used? (I use that in Freemap and osmeditor2). The only 
disadvantage is that it only returns one place name per country, e.g. 
"Hythe,UK" goes to Hythe, Hants, despite there being other places of that 
name in the UK.
