I think a good approach could be in entering all the data we can retreive
easly. We could begin in uploading all the coastline (derived work), no
problem if there are some errors, this is a wiki map and someone will fix
it :) the same for the main political countrylines (derived from old maps).
After that a good set of map_features should be introduced to classify the
bigger towns (derived from landsat), informations such as political role and
populations will make renderers able to show them at all zoom levels.
About gpx related work it could be very attractive in mapping first the main
roads and after the minors. In every country, motorways are quite few, and
with a bit of organization, it should be easy to collect all them.
After that we should proceed with primary, secondary and so on. This, and the
above staff, should be sufficient to show some datas at every zoom level from
anywhere.
Peoples will be involved fast when they will se on a "running" map their
village is missing :) adding the local and residential information that
actually is easy to get only with a collaborative approach.
