I add that most of the criticisms is about speed. Even if the applet may
be better with different implementation choice, this is mainly a
server-side problem. It will not disappear by switching to AJAX or Flash
if those editor still use the current tile process.

I think we could keep a simple interface for the person who discover the
project. If people start their experimentation directly with JOSM, they
can easily delete or move a large amount of data by mistake.
The current applet is good to discover OSM for different reason that the
new flash or AJAX editor should try to keep :
- Landsat background. Not usefull when you have your 1pt/s tracks on
JOSM, but it is really reassuring when you begin to try things.
- Common look with the slippy map. JOSM is more abstract (no landsat
again...)
- Limited area editing, impossible to select/delete/move large amount of
data.
To sum up, the online editor should be designed for casual edition, and
the user should be informed that other editors exist for mass edition.
(I personally spend a lot of time before trying JOSM because I was
certain when I discover the project that the applet was the normal
interface that everybody used)
Another great thing that we should have is a sandbox to let people
experiment editing without the fear of messing up the data.
