[OSM-talk] who is working in my region

But watching node activity just shows you that 'someone' has been
working in your area - it doesn't actually answer the original question.
Trying this in 'my' area that I'm working on currently just shows a list
of 30 nodes, all helpfully labelled identically, as 'active node' with
no time indicators or personal Identification. I can't even tell if
they're me or someone else.

Yes you can actually. Just subscribe to the rss feed for node changes
and you will receive details of the most recent edits. You can centre it
in a specific lat and lon or you can leave the lat and lon blank so that
you see the last 50 edits from anywhere.
