I didn't test the following; but do I understand it correct that if you load a 
gpx it automagically transfers waypoints to the data layer or do you have a 
menu item to do this?

- automatic conversion of waypoints to nodes. If a waypoint in a GPX begins
  with a character other than '0', it will be added to the OSM data layer as
  a node.
