it would be cool to have a general purpose route generator. Commercial
routing solutions allow to select a "vehicle" (car, cycle, pedestrian)
and to select from shortest distance or shortest time.
Choosing cycle or pedestrian usually results in unusable routes. I guess
it's the base data which mainly is tagged for cars in the commercial
data.
Additionally to shortest distance and shortest time, there could be an
option "Nicest route", and for the vehicle selection there should be
more options as cycle can have different meanings (trekking, MTB etc.).
There are even cyclists which may want to choose "avoid hills" :) .
To create really good routes it needs additional tags in the database,
e.g. to tag a way as preferred for wanderers, cyclists, motorcycles,
oldtimers etc. etc.
