I have upgraded packages to debian stable (etch released Sunday), but am having
trouble with MySQL.

mysqld processes start, but I can't talk to them. No mysqld.sock is appearing,
and according to netstat (I have enabled binding to all IPs) mysql is not
binding to the network port.
