It can be done, but it's the wrong answer. An island isn't on top of a
stretch of water - it is a hole in it (unless it's some sort of floating
island). Clockwise / Anticlockwise is the right answer used in lots of
other places (both GIS and non GIS), and it works.
The only outstanding problem is that putting a whole river or coastline
into an OSM way is not practical with our current editors, so we need
some kind of fix there.
