I have wanted to do something similar. These sites describe adding a
remote trigger to digital cameras, amongst other things. Apparently
there isn't much to it, just wiring an external button in parallel with
the built in button. I was intending to use conductive glue rather than
than soldering:

I have a couple of _really_ cheap digital cameras - maybe  $20USD or
less. Let alone exif data, they don't apply any timestamp whatsoever.
But then they don't have a clock on board either! Really they are toys
and the resolution is at webcam CIF level.  I have another cheapish BenQ
DC150 digicam, which does some exif, and does at least timestamp the
file on the SD stick. You can then use jhead or similar to copy that
timestamp into the exif.
