Folks,

Just when I really hoped I'd seen the back of this problem. Our friend
the phantom mapper (or maybe there are a couple of well-meaning
vandals in the midlands) has been back at work on what he ernestly
believes to be the N6. This time he doesn't seem to have mucked around
with any nodes (except, I think, to tie his fantasy road into the real
one), but he has retagged the crude alignment representing today's
building site as "trunk" again. Once again, he's managed to do this
just in time for his dodgy edits to make the fresh Mapnik tiles, so
that layer will once again be f*$@ed for another week. Once again he's
done his work anonymously[1] and once again there's no clue on the
Ireland mapping page or here of what he's about or why.

Once again I'll pose the question: this isn't a philosophical point.
The system knows who did this but won't tell ordinary members of the
community. There are those among us who (seem to) think that the
status quo is OK. Do those people think that, in addition to
collecting new mapping info I should also have to stand guard over the
bits that I've already done?

Anybody with a hard enough neck to tag an unbuilt road twice as built
needn't be shy about putting his name to his work. The more newbie
mappers we entice to join the project (and I'm very much in favour of
this), the more acute this problem will become.

Accountable edits now!

Dermot

Here's the history of the way. Look out for the bit where "service"
becomes "trunk':

[1] Yes, I know that the database knows who did it, but I don't. Would
the DB perhaps be so kind as to get him to drop into the list and say
hello?
