SpamAssassin works fine, even better if combined with ClamAV
and the SaneSecurity signatures.

The spam filter stuff integrates with the mail server,
though, not mailman directly - you're better doing this
because you can then reject the junk at SMTP time (and
therefore not send bounces to innocent victims).

What MTA are you using? If it's Exim then I can maybe give
you some pointers in setting them up.

[Saying all this - the main OSM lists could also do with a
spam filter... :-(]
