Hi Jeffrey,

We have gone with a less verbose system for Australia (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Australian_Roads_Tagging#Reference_Tagging) that matches our simpler needs. We have tried to make it as simple as possible and logical to make it easy to remember and use.

It is really up to you, as long as it is logical, you will be able to build rules for renderers to process it. We are going to try this for Australian route symbols over the next few weeks/months. We plan to make it as generic as possible so that you will be able to build in extra rules and symbols for specific countries.

Regards,
Brent.
