could you please use a new tag, in addition to the ones already there, of
admin_level=4 for US state borders.  (admin_level 6 would probably be for
county borders if you do any of these)?

this will help things know which borders are more important without having
to know all the words and their significance in each location (example of
problem: finland and italy have regions and provinces both.  however, one
has regions inside provinces, the other has provinces inside regions...)
