No, I was using this as an example, there are numerous other
possibilities. If the md5sum of your file is wrong then it might have
been corrupted during the transfer from the OSM server.

In my case the md5sum of the files were correct, it was only the bzip2
process which was occasionally failing. This pointed at a problem inside
my machine.
