Do I need to ask my hosting provider to do this?

I seem to have set up my vhost configuration correctly - but the only way I 
can get it to work is to add newforest.free-map.org.uk plus the IP address to 
my /etc/hosts on my home box. Obviously it's going to be inconvenient for 
every potential user of the site to have to do this...
