"Granted, these things can be avoided by changing the way I work or by
fixing JOSM, but I don't like the outlook. 0.3 degrees is
devastatingly small if you want to work on things like large rivers,
and the 50.000 node limit kills your request if you accidentially
have a city in your bbox even if you were only interested in the
waterway."
I agree, breaking ways and having to rework is one of the reasons I could have declining interest in editing. Its difficult enough "though pleasant" to collect data, and then edit it. Compounding the problem is finished work being broken through the editing system and not being able to work on larger features and ways convieniently. I've lost tons of work, part of it is just the learning curve of what is possible with the current state of the tool set. I like to fix and forget, not constantly scan for what else I may be breaking, again... and having to patch postage stamps together will probably be annoying. Not trying to irritate.
There are other solutions ultimately, I hope.
