Is it possible to demo the slippy map offline?

At http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html?lat=51.5&lon=0.0&zoom=6
the center tile is http://tile.openstreetmap.org/6/31/21.png

If I download a few dozen tiles, covering a part of Europe in 
three different zoom levels, can I run the java script from a 
static HTML file on local disk?  Has anybody tried this?  Is there 
a recipy?
