I think route_ref should only be used for a clearly sign posted path.  No 
personal notes, or recomendations, but just paths that the land 
owners/management organisation have put there.

Cool.  If this all requires additonal data layers then maybe it can just 
wait.  I'll scribble down the routes now and add them at a future date on a 
different layer.

When I suggested adding the colour/color tag I wasn't saying that all trails 
would be red/yellow or whatever.  I was meaning that that specific trail 
would render a set colour.  This is becasue of the ones I have seen, they 
are given a colour by the forestry commision, and then the signposts around 
the forest are just wooden posts with a ring of that colour on.  Therefore I 
think any map should really render the route that colour.
