hmm, it seems like the IRC converstaion is just gunna reoccur in here.

Andy Allan made some good points. Residential roads are different not just
for legal reasons, but the way in which they are used. Parking is often
frowned apon if you don't live there, and just wondering around there is
seen as fishy, unlike unclassified roads. The roads can have cars parked
along them in a fashion that disrupts the flow of traffic heavily and yet it
wouldn't be seen as a problem or concern.

>One day, I hope, someone will get this tagging mess under control.

Yep. But, its not someone, cause its a wiki, so we all need to get it
underconrol. currently most of the time comments are made, but nothing
final comes of these types of emails.

>If a road is unsuitable for through-traffic, then there'll ultimately be
>tags for speed-bumps, for road width, for speed limit, and so on.

Speedbumps only appear on roads that I wouldn't call residential for just
the reason that they are there. Because threw traffic can use it, its not
just residenence. The council try to discosrage it, but that doesn't mean
they can't use it.

>Similarly, a route-planner wouldn't choose a cul-de-sac anyway because it
>doesn't lead anywhere.

Yes obviously.

>you're not really adding to the richness of the dataset.

This is sorta true. Although I do use the abutters (seperatly tagged) to
mark places roughly when I don't no exactly where they are. Some small
viallges just lie along a threw road and have no side streets (hamlets
really), and for these abutters/landuse doesn't really matter.

The reason I said abutters=none to counter the auto adding of residential,
rather than just requesting it is removed in the render, is becuase a lot of
people still use residential tag alone on the asumption that the abutters
will be added. I would discorrage this, but adding abutters=none doesn't
cause inconvenience to others, but helps for the problem I originally
refered to.
