This is basically because it goes via shapefiles, and is related to
preparing the data so that it's suitable for shapefiles. The errors arise
from with segments not aligned in the wrong direction, ways with
non-contiguous segments, branched ways, or ways with two nodes rather than
one at the join of two segments. The first two errors should not cause any
problems, as they are fixed with the "wayclean" utility, but the last two
are not fixed yet.
