This is the first example that came to mind. (Green is the Green!, Yellow is
other, grey is road, light grey is path)
There are a lot of areas of grass. The lighter areas would be the areas
used for events such as the fete, or barbiques, taking potshots at morris
dancers etc. The dark green areas are still public...they could still be
used as the green..they are in effect the vilalge green. These just run off
indefinatly, eventually getting thin and just being the grass between the
road and the hedge. The darkgreen and light green blend between.
My point is that I cannot state where there is a green in the same way as I
could say where a recreational area is, or a Playground or a football field;
because it lacks clear borders. It also isn't used as a 'green' as such.
Its called the green, because its a public grass area wich is named as the
village green, and used for events that typically happen around a
centralised spot.
If people have greens that are a lump of grass that is clearly different
from everywhere else, then the tag would be usable for them, but I havn't
seen a place like that before. I can on the other hand tell you 'the
central meeting point' of the village, wich is called 'the green'. And its
where the red star is.
The main point is really that a public area of grass, and the green are in
effect the same. Its just up to people where they meet up. If the green
gets tagged as an area, then I would then have to move on to tagging the
other areas of grass as green, becuase they could be the green if the event
was large enough.
Something like "natural=grass", "access=yes" and then "landuse=green" for a
node. This would make more sence to me, although still have the same issues
of where to stop adding more grass!
Almost finally it doesn't really seem fitting with "leisure=common" wich
already exsists, and yet they are extreamly similar, yet now appear in 2
different keys altogether.
I would just like to clear this up. I think anyone can use it if they
want...I'm not suggesting they shouldn't simple because I disagree with it,
casue that would be lame. I didn't ever say that, and I would disagree with
it on the basis that many things I wish to tag, others may not want to, or
just have no interest in the matter. That doesn't mean there against it,
and anything that doesn't cause problems for others is OK. Making a messy
standardised tagging scheme that would cause problems (as the area use of
village green would) in many situations is what I am arguing against. And
yes, people are free not to use the standardised features page, before that
is pointed out, but ideally I would like to use it becasue I think this
enshores consistency for OSM's data as a whole.
