One diffinative source is the Defra website, at :

      http://www.defra.gov.uk.

Then search for common land, and town/village green.

As an side, one thing to remember is that common land does not necessarily
denote common ownership, most common land is privately or local authority
owned. What is does denote is rights in common, and as has been pointed out in
this thread and the one it has spawned there are lots of wierd and wonderful
rights in common.
