There is a plugin for the TomToms that is supposed to do tracking, but I
can't get it to work on my 710. http://web.tiscali.it/macri/Event_Logger/
The TomToms actually run linux, and a whole alternative distribution is
being developed, called OpenTom.
http://www.opentom.org/
Currently the opentom distribution has an MP3 player (even for the
TomToms that don't), GPX logger, a compass and G-force readout. The nice
thing about it is that if you get any but the most expensive TomToms,
they take SD card memory, and if you swap the card to an Open Tom card,
you have an MP3 player. Swap the card back and you immediately have your
TomTom back as though nothing had happend (except sometimes the clock
forgets the time, but that's easy to resync to the GPS time).
It's all a bit beta at the moment. If you are good at compiling kernels
and stuff, please buy one and help us to get it working :-). If you are
buying a device mainly for OSM data gathering use in the short term,
you're probably better off with one of the hand held Garmin devices. If
you are buying a sat nav, and want the best, go for a TomTom, but don't
expect OpenTom to be useful straight away. It may become easy to get
working, it may not. There is some activity in a private e-mail that is
going between me and a small number of other people.
