I am happy to mount a loopback fs with whatever file system is required.
By default, ext2/3 use linked list directories. Some implementations of EXT3
introduce non-standard b-tree indexing to the file system. This can and does
break compatibility with some EXT3 implementations. I would prefer to run with a
file system designed natively with b-tree look-ups and with small files in mind.
I would certainly feel uncomfortable with 2^18 files in the top level of a
directory as suggested. Getting a handle on number of files/ space used would
take a long while with tools such as du.
AIUI, JFS was built for large numbers of small files, is free, well tested,
actively maintained and reportedly provides excellent performance.
