Respectfully,
I agree with the OP. This being a discussion list and, more importantly,
THE discussion list for newbies to OSM, I think it's appropriate to set
reply-to-list. I don't think it is useful to suggest that they obtain,
implement, learn, and use a new mail client just so the discussion stays on
the list where it should. If this were an announcement list or the -devel
list, I would feel otherwise. The fact that the cited RFCs do not concur
with this is relevant, but not necessarily overriding--perhaps more
indicative of the problem than anything else. One might as well argue
against allowing html in smtp which can be even better supported with
similar arguments.
As a list admin one asks oneself,"On this particular mailing list should
participants (generally) keep the discussion on the list or off the list?"
And then one endeavors to make the desired behavior easier for the
participants, ie. one makes that behavior the default if possible.
This list is here to help users with openstreetmap, not to cure the world
of aberrant or brain-dead mail clients (or even brain-dead users).
Furthermore, everyone opposed to this idea is perfectly capable of creating
whatever behavior they deem appropriate within their own mail client
whereas the opposite may not necessarily be true--this too is worth
consideration.
Best,
Robert
