+1 for splitting ways in JOSM.  <aol>Me too!!1!</aol>

Ideally, I'd like to be able to select some portion of an existing
way, then apply tags for that partial-way and have JOSM automatically
"split" and "rejoin" the ways.  This would be very helpful for adding
crossing streets after adding a major highway.
