Andy, I don't think you are correct about Thunderbird, although I wish
you were.  See

In short, some patches to achieve reply-to-list exist, they may be
present in Thunderbird 3 when its released sometime this year, Debian
has applied them to its Thunderbird. To find out if the patches have
been applied to FC5 Thunderbird, I have enabled EnigMail and the
reply-to-list extension referred to above. I now have a reply-to-list
button, but it doesn't do anything.
