Hi Martin,

VMap0 does, indeed, has the elevation (polylines) layer, have a look  
http://media.mapnik.org/vmap0_contours.jpg

It is quite high level, though - no much use for walkers :)

If anyone interested I can upload vmap0 contours (shapefiles) for Europe to 
dev.openstreetmap.org somewhere.
