Er, no. That's not what I said.

In order for the data to be usable for anything but rendering, it needs
to be sorted. "Real" point features (as opposed to those points that are
just vertices for ways) into separate amenity, (poi, whatever) layers,
ways into line layers, area features into polygons. What I want is to
ditch the "everything is a line" model. Whether this is done in
shapefiles, GML, or any other well-described and OGR-compatible format
is (almost) irrelevant.
