If you can use JOSM, I guess you'll probably still want to use JOSM.  
It offers a _lot_ more power than Potlatch. Potlatch is really an  
"easy way in" for the novice and casual user.

Have you tried Gnash? (Though I sympathise - there's no Java 1.5 for  
my 10.3 Mac, and both JOSM and now the applet require Java 1.5...)
