GPS itself is totally agnostic - if you write a low level driver the
chipset actually gives you x,y,z coordinates (in a reference frame where
0 lat 0 lng is 1,0,0 IIRC). Of course getting from that to a lat/lng
requires an idea of what the planet is shaped like :)
