but in this case it's quite cumbersome to change additional tags.
for instance: suppose a motorway is split into two ways. Then both have a
different set of tags. If I add the ref to one, I would have to add it to the
other too. Until now I've created two separated segment-chains, and then
created a way from them. Each segment chain had its oneway-attribute set to
true. Do I need to change that back to two separated ways?

How do I do that? I can remove points out of ways, but when I try to delete a
segment JOSM removes the way (and all its attributes?) and leaves me with the
chain of segments. I would have to recreate the way then...
